Out of the 400+ couples I have married over the last few years these are some of the best vows I have heard. There’s 10 examples of different types of vows; some long; some short. I always tell my couples that there are no rules when it comes to writing some personal vows to the love of your life. Well, there is one rule actually; just write from your heart.

So, just to prove my point, here are some vows that some of my brides and some of my grooms have used that I thought were really good and it just shows that the length and style doesn’t really matter as long as they reflect your personality. Read on for some vow inspo.

Example #1

I call upon everyone present to witness that I, [name], take you [name], to be my best mate, my fellow nerd, my travel buddy, my lawful wedded wife.

Thanks for making me laugh, for having my back, for believing in my dreams and for sharing yours with me, for agreeing that there is no situation that can’t be improved with great wine and even greater company.

For loving me even after numerous sporting injuries and hours waiting in hospital ER's, and for accepting that I'm always going to be late to everything.

Thank you for helping me see me which aspects of life are worth taking seriously, but also for showing me that ultimately, the most important thing about life is to not take it too seriously at all.

We have seen the best of each other. We have also seen the worst in each other… and yet here we are today doing this anyway. Here in front of everyone we love, today I make a statement of my love for you. I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.

I promise to put you first, and to put us first. To build you up and never tear you down. I promise you’ll never have to hit the dance floor alone. I won’t promise that we’ll never fight but I will promise that my love will be bigger than any argument.

I promise to give you my jacket when you’re cold. To not eat the last chip on your plate that you’ve been saving. To keep dreaming big and to always share life’s most monumental moments with you, but also to remember it is the little moments that matter most.

I will remember that home is wherever you are. You are the person I choose to walk alongside for the rest of my life. You are the gin to my tonic and I can’t wait to continue sharing a lifetime of new experiences with you as your husband. I love you.

Example #2

I stand here today to promise you my heart entirely and for eternity. Being with you has made me more accepting and open minded, allowed me to relinquish control (much to your joy) but most of all allowed me to see my self worth.

I love you with every ounce of my being and will always be by your side, no matter how tough things can be. Thank you for loving not only me but also my children and accepting them in as your own.

Thank you for showing me how meaningful and beautiful your love is. Today I make a promise not only to be your wife but your life partner (and give up the TV for The All Blacks).. Thru sickness and in health, good times and bad. We got this.

Example #3

[name], you really are my best friend. Not the type of best friend I can play 18 holes with… but the type of best friend I can spend the rest of my life with.

I want to come home every day, see that smile and kiss you… after I’ve said hello to the dogs.

I love how we are so different, but how similar we can be. I love that you enjoy silence, and I find it awkward. That my stories have a point, and yours take forever to get there. I love your freckles, and I love that my thumb fits perfectly on the end of your nose.

But most of all, I love you and how much you love me. I can’t wait to have our own family, and be yours for the rest of our lives.

Example #4

I call upon everyone present to witness that I, [name], take you [name], to be my lawful wedded wife. You have brought such joy and happiness to my life. Thank you for loving and excepting me and my children for who we are.

I cherish the moment we met and every moment we spend together. You have stood by me through thick and thin and our love for each other has grown from strength for strength.

I promise to stand by you when things get tough. I promise to listen to when you need to vent. I promise to put up with you on your phone as soon as you open your eyes every morning.

I promise to love and cherish you every moment like it’s our last days on this earth. You’re like a mixed bag of lollies - full of surprises and goodies. I Love you.

Example #5

I love you [name]. You are my best friend. Today I give myself to you in marriage. I promise to be there when you need me, to comfort and encourage you, to share success and failure through strength and weakness.

I vow to cherish and respect you, to be open and honest with you, and to always make you laugh. You inspire me with your values, your empathy, and I want to continue to learn from you. I promise to love you, to commit to making each day work together and to make our relationship even stronger. Whatever lies ahead, good or bad, we will face together.

I now take my place as your husband, and I choose to spend today, and forever with you. I can’t wait to see what adventures await us.

Example #6

I admire and will endeavour to mirror the way you openly interact with our friends, and our families, in being so given of your time, understanding and support.

[name] my love for you grows and grows every day, from the time our relationship went to “more than just friends”, to the birth of our daughter, through both our combined and separate highs and lows, I vow to continue to grow our love and keep it at the centre of everything we do, plan and say.

I promise to never let the sun go down on ‘unresolved’ discussions??? I WILL check our calendar events more frequently with the aim of being at the right place at the right time!! I promise to keep making you smile and laugh - with me, and at times at me!

To keep chocolate on hand for times of need - well all the time! I will continue to encourage you to believe in yourself and remind you how special you are to me and everyone joining us here today.

I promise to energise you with my ‘old man’ ways, quirky views, and optimistic spin on the world we share together.

I will learn to accept that when you are right, you are right - except about getting a puppy!! I will honour and support all of your values and beliefs. I promise to love you more and more every day as we continue along this amazing life adventure!

I choose you now and always to do life with, to love you with everything I have, appreciating all that you are and will be. I promise to support and encourage you…to be your true partner in life and crime. I will always stand by you and be there when you need me…or even when you don’t…

I can’t wait to celebrate the good times and talk to you in the tough times. I will bring you ice cream on those dusty mornings and care for you when you’re unwell. I promise to have fun and enjoy the simple things with you…like days at the beach and kicking the footy with [child] at the park.

Example #8

[name], you’re my partner in life and my one true love. I will be your biggest supporter and love you more and more each day. I will laugh at your jokes, have the theatrical playlist ready for the car ride and always applaud your kitchen dance moves.

I promise to love and cherish you, always. I promise to check my pockets for tissues before doing the washing, to always add extra garlic to our meals and to care for you in the good times and the tough times.

I promise to love you unconditionally, to support you in your goals and to be your best friend forever.

[name], you are my princess. As I have said from the moment I met you, I knew you were the one for me. We instantly clicked and laughed at each other’s lame humour. It felt like I had known you for ages. The last three years of my life with you have been the best and I can’t tell you how excited I am to grow old with you.

I love everything about you from your beautiful smile through to your stubbornness. I promise I will look after you, love you and always be there for you.

So, as you can see, there are many ways tell your loved one how special they are in your life and how you intend to love and protect them over the years. My only advice is to “make them your own” and to have some fun with them. It’s a special moment that should reflect your personality.
